Scammers pretend to be your grandkids to get money in phone scam - ABC2 News

COLUMBIA, Md. - We consider it one of the lowest of the low when it comes to scamming, but con artists are ripping off seniors by pretending to be their grandchildren. It’s happening in the Baltimore area.

Eighty-five year-old Dorothy from Columbia got a panicked phone call two weeks ago. The caller on the line sounded like her 20-year-old grandson, Tim. He called her ‘Grandma’ when they spoke, claimed he'd been drinking.

Like any good grandparent, Dorothy didn't hesitate. She took notes and soon went to wire the cash to a man in Italy at an address a so-called lawyer for Tim gave her over the phone.

She was distraught, but did it anyway and when the phone rang the next day with another request for money, Dorothy wired more cash. Then she called her daughter, Tim's mom, to make sure she knew he was in trouble.

Accident Injury Lawyer Blog Returns - Accident Injury Lawyer (blog)

I just got back from vacation and then a trial in Baltimore, Maryland. My partner Laura Zois and I won a $537,000 verdict for our client in a slip and fall case in a Baltimore County school. It does not match the $2.5 million verdict awarded to our clients last week in Rod Gaston's wrongful death medical malpractice case but it is still a good 10 days for Miller & Zois clients.

I'll write more about our trial later and try to put some of the samples from the trial in the help center on our website. We may even order the transcript to post on line because it includes so much of the David Ball/Don Keenan reptile themes that I have talked about on this blog.

This was a really fun case to try and it reminds me of why we do what we do. But I'm glad to be back to my usual routine which includes regularly posting to this blog.

Annapolis officer indicted in fatal car crash - Baltimore Sun (blog)

James Salyers, 52, of Gambrills, was indicted last week by a Baltimore grand jury in the October death of Andrew Arnold-McCoy 19, of Glen Burnie, according to court records. He is scheduled to be arraigned Sept. 9 in Baltimore City Circuit Court.

Charges against Salyers in the 10-count indictment include running a red light and speeding, according to court records. Reached by telephone, Salyers referred calls to his lawyer, Andrew I. Alperstein.

Charges against Salyers in the 10-count indictment include running a red light and speeding, according to court records. Reached by telephone, Salyers referred calls to his lawyer, Andrew I. Alperstein. "The fault of the accident remains very much in dispute," Alperstein said. "There is evidence that refutes the state's theory of the case." He declined to discuss details.

Alperstein said his client retired from Baltimore city police as a detective before going to work with Annapolis Police Department and had a "long career of helping other people." Salyers had spent the last eight of his 28 ½ years with the Baltimore department in the executive protection detail for Mayors Martin O'Malley, Sheila Dixon and Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, according to Alperstein.

Delegate files suit against Harford Sheriff - Baltimore Sun (blog)

Del. Richard K. Impallaria has filed a lawsuit against the Harford County sheriff, claiming towing companies are committing "theft" and "extortion" and the county's chief law enforcement officer should do something about it.

The suit is the latest turn in the legislator's running dispute with Harford County towing companies and Sheriff L. Jesse Bane that began early in 2010 when Impallaria's Ford Ranger was wrecked in a two-car accident and towed. Impallaria has been steamed up since then about what he claims was the tow company's attempt to hold onto his personal property and his license plates until he paid his tow bill. His account of the incident has been disputed.

20 W Courtland St, Bel Air, MD 21014, USA "I wouldn't be a state lawmaker if I let people push me around or take advantage of me," said Impallaria, a three-term Republican who represents District 7, which includes portions of Baltimore and Harford counties.

The suit filed on July 28 asks the court to order Bane to "cease these unlawful practices" described in the suit as "theft" of property and "extortion" of money. The suit does not include details.

NRP officer struck in head-on crash - Annapolis Capital

Shortly after 11 a.m., emergency crews were called to Bayside Beach Road near Cook Farm Road for a head-on collision involving the NRP officer's Ford Crown Victoria and the teen's Acura.

An investigation determined excessive speed was a factor in the crash and the 17-year-old driver lost control of his vehicle, a Maryland State Police spokesman said..

MILLERSVILLE - The county and Annapolis police departments are joining with law enforcement agencies throughout Maryland to crack down on speeders, and impaired, distracted or aggressive drivers starting tomorrow and continuing into September.

During the past five years in the month of August, county police have investigated 22 deaths as a result of roadway crashes. The summer months typically remain the highest period of the year for fatal collisions and wrecks with life-threatening injuries.

Crash victim wonders if city gives a hoot - Baltimore Sun (blog)

On Saturday afternoon (July 23), I was in a three-car accident in northeast Baltimore. I was the collateral damage, my tiny car mashed by a giant SUV that bounced off something that looked like a Sierra van. Because I was miraculously unhurt, I jumped out of my car and immediately entered what I can only describe as an alternate reality.

First, I grabbed my cell phone to call 911 for an ambulance (the two other drivers were hurt) and police (the cars were blocking an intersection). To my utter amazement, what I heard was not “Police emergency,” but “Please wait for the next available representative.” I looked at the number I’d dialed to be sure that it was 911; it was. But when I put the phone back to my ear, I heard again “Please wait for the next . . .” I don’t know how long I waited, but ultimately I got through, and the ambulance and police arrived.

Next, I tried to get the insurance information for the person who’d hit me, who was sitting in his car waiting to be moved. In my many decades of driving I’d learned that exchanging insurance information was not only routine but necessary. However, the officer who had his license and insurance cards refused to give me the information. She said I had to get it from the police report, which I would have to buy. I was dumbfounded. I asked her if I could just have the gentleman’s insurance information, as he had admitted fault, and she could see I was the proverbial innocent bystander. She refused. Police procedures, she said.

Since Saturday, I have been trying to find out how to get the police report. I have called the Northeast District, the Mayor’s Office, the Maryland Insurance Administration, Central Records, and the lawyers for the police (now there are some rude folks). Not only can I not get the information I need—I would be happy with just the insurance information—I can’t get anyone to tell me who made this policy or why it is legal for the police to withhold from me information that I need to file an insurance claim. Everyone just says that it is police procedure.

Owners of repair shop plead guilty in towing scandal - Baltimore Sun (blog)

Two owners of Majestic Auto Repair pleaded guilty Monday in federal court to paying up to $1 million in bribes to more than 50 Baltimore police officers who allegedly steered business to the Rosedale shop and falsified crash reports.

Brothers Hernan Alexis Moreno and Edwin Javier Mejia each face a maximum of 25 years in prison for one conviction each of extortion and conspiracy and fines of up to $500,000 at their U.S. District Court sentencings, which are scheduled for Nov. 18.

They are likely to receive terms of between six to nine years, however, according to their plea agreements, which allow the defendants to appeal sentences longer than 108 months and prosecutors to appeal terms shorter than 71 months.

So far, 17 city officers have been arrested in the scandal and suspended from the police force without pay, while 14 others were put on desk duty during the investigation. But the Majestic brothers admitted in court Monday that more than 50 Baltimore officers were involved in the three-year-long scheme, which is now the focus of one of the widest police corruption probes in recent years.

Damages in Balto. Co. Exxon leak suit rise to $1.5 billion - Baltimore Sun

Baltimore County jurors returned a verdict for punitive damages against ExxonMobil Corp. on Thursday that raises the total award stemming from an underground gasoline leak in 2006 to more than $1.5 billion, a figure that a plaintiffs' lawyer says could make it the largest judgment ever in a case of this type.

A review of the final verdict, released in full Friday, shows that it includes more than $1 billion in new awards divided among 160 families and businesses in the small north county community of Jacksonville, plus compensatory damages awarded earlier in the week.

A sample of 36 of the 160 verdict forms made available by the Circuit Court shows that in some cases, plaintiffs were awarded more than four times in punitive damages what they received in compensation for loss of property values, emotional distress and for medical monitoring of potential illness from contaminated water.

The family of Hans Wilhelmsen of Jarrettsville Pike, which received the highest compensatory award of $13.9 million, was awarded $46.8 million in punitive damages. The family of Mark Lindenmeyer of Hampshire Glen Court received $6 million in compensation and $15.6 million in punitive damages. The total punitive damages released by the court Thursday were about $320 million.
